JULY 8 - Night Italian singing sensation Gianni Nannini opens for Blondie
Tonight in the Stravinski Auditorium the stage opened with the Italian singing sensation Gianni Nannini. Her rich and powerful vocals attracted a large and loyal crowd. The second group, with no less of a following, took the stage with equal if not greater excitement. After all, it was Blondie! From 1978-1982, this band was one of the hottest punk-rock groups around. Only this year, after a long hiatus, Blondie is back together, including fabulous frontwoman Deborah Harry and her trademark long, blonde locks and black sunglasses. To the thrill of the audience, who seemed to know every word in the repertoire, the group ran through many of their classics, starting out with "Dreaming" and "Hanging on the Telephone" and progressed into "Atomic," "The Tide is High" and "Sunday Girl." Harry and the band belted out "Call Me" and "Boom Boom" before breaking into their newest hit "Maria," which was written apparently by their bassist. The encore was "Screaming Skin" and "Heart of Glass." Throughout the set, the bassist and drummer tested the potential of the Meyer self-powered system, especially the PSW-6's for warm, controlled and potent low end. The band proved that they stood the test of time, including Harry whose voice and sexy enthusiasm rang through the crowd with endless endurance.
