Carman's R.I.O.T Tour Powers Up with MSL-4sBlackhawk Audio of Nashville, Tennessee, is a regional sound rental company that, until recently, has supplied only small sound systems for local performances. This year, though, Blackhawk will be providing a large-scale sound system for contemporary Christian artist Carman's national Righteous Invasion of Truth (R.I.O.T.) tour, which includes six 50,000-seat shows in arenas. "The MSL-4 is what made this possible," says Blackhawk owner Rich Shimer. "The fact that MSL-4 is self-powered plays a large part in this tour," explains Shimer. "Because the system is plug-and-play, there's less gear to ship and set up. That reduces expenses in lots of ways." Shimer is also impressed the sound quality of the MSL-4. "Everyone who's heard this box says it's like a high-powered high-fidelity stereo speaker. It's a dramatic improvement over our older equipment." Shimer also appreciates the MSL-4s affordability. He points out that he purchased forty MSL-4s for this tour. In addition to Blackhawk's forty new MSL-4s, the tour's sound system includes sixteen 650-P self-powered subwoofers, twelve USW subwoofers, ten UPA-1C loudspeakers, six UM-1C monitors, two LD-1 remote control units, and SIM System II. "The system is 98% Meyer," he says. "One and half million people will see this tour. Meyer has catapulted us into the big league." Shimer says that Blackhawk is already getting calls to take on other large projects. Ed Crippen, Carman's sound manager, shares Shimer's enthusiasm for the MSL-4. "This is a tremendous box," he says. "When I first heard it, I was amazed at the imaging. You could hear the exact placement of every musician on the recording." Crippen explains that the MSL-4 solved many of the problems the sound crew had encountered on previous tours. "Our shows are very complex, with 24-tracks of playback, interactive video, a live band, and six dancers. It's important for us to have a small speaker that will fit around the video screens and be easy to install in the round. The MSL-4 is small and light, and fits in perfectly. It keeps cabling to a minimum - that's really important in these venues. It's probably reduced our gear from a truck and a half to three-quarters of a truck." "This is a change in direction for audio components," adds Crippen. "For the past few years, I've been hoping an audio company would develop a loudspeaker like this. It just makes sense to package everything in one cabinet - it's so much easier. I'm really looking forward to taking the MSL-4s on the road." The first leg of Carman's Righteous Invasion of Truth tour begins on February 12 at Hirsch Memorial Coliseum in Shreveport, Louisiana, and concludes on May 11 at the Houston Astrodome. The second leg begins on August 26 at the Ector County Coliseum in Odessa, Texas, and concludes on November 21 at the University of New Mexico's Pan American Center in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
