The Family Dog Returns to San Francisco with State-of-the-Art Sound SystemAfter almost thirty years, the San Francisco production company The Family Dog has re-formed and begun booking bands at their new venue in San Francisco's Maritime Union Hall. Under the leadership of Boots Hughston, former sax player for the HooDoo Rhythm Devils, and with original Family Dog founder Chet Helms as executive consultant, the new production company has put on shows with artists ranging from Iron Butterfly and Greg Allman to Mose Allison, Richie Havens and Etta James. The sound system in the hall, jointly designed by Meyer Sound and Family Dog House Engineer Dave Dennison, uses the newest technology from Meyer Sound, the Self-Powered Series. Each side of the PA consists of five MSL-4s hung in a 3-on-top and 2-underneath array with four 650- Ps on the floor. A center vocal fill utilizes a UPA-2C, and the stage monitoring is handled by six USM-1s and four UM-1Cs on the floor with two MTS-4s and two MSL-4s for use as sidefills or drum monitors. In addition, a full Multi-Channel SIM System II is installed at the mix position and is used to analyze the hall during each performance. Dennison is extremely pleased with the new system, commenting, "The versatility and coupling quality of the Meyer Sound Self-Powered Products are exactly what this hall needed: state-of-the-art quality for any cutting edge venue."
