The Howlin' Wolf Finds New Power with MSL-4sHailed by Rolling Stone Magazine as "The alternative rock club in New Orleans", The Howlin' Wolf has recently installed a new sound system utilizing Meyer Sound's new Self-Powered Series Loudspeakers. The seven year old, 1,000 person capacity club is noted for its alternative acts, which have included such artists as Alanis Morissette, Sonic Youth and Better Than Ezra. The club also hosts a variety of rock and folk acts such as Grammy Award winning Alison Krauss and Union Station, and John Cale (of The Velvet Underground). The new sound system was sold to the club and installed by Simon Fraser of Kingston Audio in New Orleans. Fraser explains how the club chose the new Self-Powered Series. "The club had an existing system by a different manufacturer that didn't always meet spec for certain events, and I would rent them my Meyer MSL-3/650-R2 system for those occasions. When the owner decided to upgrade his system, Meyer was at the top of the list, but we weren't sure which model would be most appropriate. So, we had a shootout between the Meyer MSL-3 and the MSL-2. As luck would have it, Joe Rimstidt from Meyer was in town to show me the new Self-Powered Series, so we included the MSL-4 and the MTS-4 in the shootout. We were all blown away by the MSL-4! It was clear that in terms of size, performance and cost, the MSL-4s were the way to go." The new system for the club consists of two hung MSL-4s per side and two 650-Ps per side on the floor. The Howlin' Wolf owner Jack Groetsch is extremely pleased with the new system. He notes "In other clubs, sometimes sound quality is not one of their top priorities. To us, it is extremely important. And I think it is paying off, since I have already heard comments to the effect of 'The Howlin' Wolf has the best sound in town.' " The club can be contacted at: The Howlin' Wolf September, 1997 |
