World-Class Sound at Mexico's La Boom DiscosThe largest new disco in Mexico City, La Boom Mexico, and the most popular disco in Cancun, La Boom Cancun, have more in common than a name: they both have state-of- the-art sound systems designed by the discos' management and Meyer Sound. La Boom Mexico, which can easily accommodate over 3,000 people a night, is really three clubs in one: La Boom Club, Mystery, and Tequilla Boom. La Boom Club, which opened in May, is an event center, hosting corporate events during the day and serving as a disco at night. The room consists of two floors in the round, and includes a dance floor that can accommodate 500 people. The sound system comprises four MTS-4s, twelve MSL-2As, twelve DS-2s, eight 650-R2s, four USW-1s, three CP-10s, and three VX-1s. Scott Gledhill, Meyer Sound's Director of Latin American Sales, worked closely with the disco's general manager, Alfonso Valadez, for over one and a half years, designing the system. "There were lots of site visits, discussions, and meetings," says Gledhill. Once the system was installed, Gledhill carefully aligned the system with SIM System II. He also returned with SIM to fine tune the system on opening night. "The project was an example of excellent planning, preparation, and teamwork," says Gledhill. Mystery, the second room at La Boom Mexico, opened in August, and holds around 400 people. The theme downstairs at Mystery is techno and house music - genres that require significant mid-bass power. The system at Mystery comprises four MTS-4s, four 650- R2s, one CP-10, and one VX-1. "Space can be tight in discos," says Gledhill. "The MTS- 4 is compact enough to fit easily in discos and powerful enough to provide the clear, clean sound people expect." La Boom Mexico is the result of several years of collaboration between Meyer Sound and the disco's management. In 1992, Valadez asked Gledhill to align the small UPA systems in three other discos, the Christine chain in Cancun, Ixtapa, and Puerta Vallarta. Valadez was so impressed by the improvements Gledhill made, using SIM, that he asked Meyer Sound to work with him designing a state-of-the-art sound system for a new disco in Cancun. La Boom Cancun, La Boom Mexico's sister club in Cancun, opened in March, 1993 to rave reviews. "It's clearly the best system in Cancun," says Gledhill, "and one of the best in the world." The sound system includes four flown clusters, each with two USM-1s and three DS-2s, eight 650-R2s on the dance floor, a surround system of ten UPA-1Bs and two USWs, and three CP-10s and four VX-1s for EQ. "Scott designed the system with me," says Valadez. "He gave me the best options and checked everything carefully. In two years at La Boom Cancun, we haven't had any problems. I can recommend Meyer Sound. It's the best system for discos. At La Boom Mexico, we have the most powerful and clear system in Mexico." August, 1996 |
