Meyer Hits Grand Slam at New Disney Baseball Stadium
RTA Sound of Tampa, Florida, used an innovative, mobile PA system featuring all-Meyer Self-Powered equipment for the grand opening of "Disney's Wide World of Sports" baseball park in Orlando, Florida on March 28, 1997. The date marked the last pre-season baseball game of the year and the first game for the Atlanta Braves in what will be their new spring training home. Configuring the PA system was a challenging task for RTA; they had to come up with a solution that met several difficult requirements set by Disney's Creative Entertainment division. Disney stipulated that the sound system be set-up within a brief 20 minute time period, take 5 minutes or less to strike at the appointed time, and not block the audience's view in any way. In order to meet their needs, Tom Ward, owner of RTA Sound, used innovative, custom-made aluminum carts, each holding 3 MSL-4 Self-Powered Loudspeakers and 1 650-P Self-Powered Subwoofer, to wheel the speakers on and off the field. Because their self-contained design eliminates the need for amplifier racks, the Self-Powered speakers allowed for faster set-up and decreased the possibility of error. Ward used 22 MSL-4's and 8 650-P's in all. In Disney's trademark fashion, the extravaganza was a major multimedia event including live music, a fireworks display, a Navy SEAL parachute team, and a special message from President Clinton shown on a portable Jumbotron.
