News Brief Pacific Rim 1997
Singapore dealer Concert Sound provided equipment for several large productions in 1997. "All the shows we've done with Meyer equipment have been successful. Our clients have been very happy," reports C.S. contact Ryz Martein. The Singapore International Convention and Exhibiton Centre hosted over 65,000 attendees during the SIA 50th Anniversary Celebration, which took place from July 25 through July 27. The sound system included 4 UPA-1C and 2 UPA-2C loudspeakers, 4 650-R2 subwoofers, and 4 UM-1C monitors from Concert Sound. Both an exhibition and stage show, the Anniversary showcased performers from 13 countries, with one show per hour daily. Among the featured acts were France's Amadeus Choir, a Japanese cultural performance, and a fashion show from Performing Arts of New Zealand. Seoul's Capela Club updated their conventional sound system with an MSL-4 based, Self-Powered system designed by Mike Cooper, Meyer's Asian Sales Manager. Korean distributor, Avix Trading, supplied the equipment to club owner Kim Seok. The new system includes 6 MSL-4 loudspeakers, 8 PSW-2 subwoofers, 2 CP-10 parametric equalizers, and 1 LD-1A line driver. Dynamic Source of Thailand sold an all Self-Powered system this August to be installed in Bangkok's 4000-seat MBK Hall, a venue used primarily for live concerts. The new system consists of 14 MSL-4 loudspeakers, 14 650-P subwoofers, 2 CQ-1 loudspeakers, and 2 LD-1A line drivers. The top nightspot in Phuket, Thailand, the Banana Club, installed a Meyer system provided by Meyer Distributor, Dynamic Source of Bangkok. With that help and cooperation of Club manager Surin Netesiri, Wisit Gateranatkul was able to specify the perfect system for all aspects of their needs. The club is part of the Patong Beach Hotel and offers entertainment 7 nights a week for the many Asian and European tourists visiting the resort island. Sound reinforcement for the 400-seat club is based on a variety of Self-Powered loudspeakers: four CQ-2s, two CQ-1s four HM-1s. These are paired with 4 PSW-2 Self-Powered subwoofers and 2 650-R subwoofers. Concert Sound of Singapore sold a large MSL-3-based system to Malaysian broadcast station TV3 in October. Part of a huge portable system package, the Meyer rig includes 24 MSL-3A reinforcement loudspeakers, paired with 12 650-R2 subwoofers, and 12 USM-1 stage monitors. Acoustic Technical Laboratory supplied a self-powered system consisting of 4 MSL-4 loudspeakers, 2 650-P subwoofers, and two CP-10 parametric equalizers for the Huis Ten Bosch ("House of the Forest") theme park in Sasebo City, Nagasaki, Japan. Installed by Soundcraft, the new system is part of a daily event entitled "Canal Fantasia," which opened on July 19 as part of the park's 5th anniversary celebration. The oceanfront park is modeled after a city in the Netherlands and utilizes a central canal as part of its transportation network. The system provides music for the canal water show, which begins with a parade of illuminated boats, moves to a water ski display, and culminates with fireworks and a laser show. As reported by Akio Kawada, Soundcraft faced the problem of providing sound reinforcement for a specific event in an area shared by multiple users. "The canal is not a dedicated entertainment space," Kawada explained. "Passenger boats are constantly running through the area. Coverage was further complicated by the fact that the spectators' area for the event is on a promenade limited to two sides of the quadrilateral. Hotels line the rest of the canal, so we didn't want to mar the view with a permanent installation." Soundcraft worked within these constraints by devising a mobile sound system, mounted on two "acoustic boats." The vessel department of Huis Ten Bosch designed the SONIA I and SONIA II. The boats have different coverage areas: one has 140° horizontal coverage while the other has 100° coverage. "The sound source is transmitted wirelessly to each boat from a central control room," described Kawada. "No cable is required between the ground and the boats, because the amplification power for the sound system is taken from the battery of the boat. The boats can move freely anywhere in the canal as long as they stay within a 100 meter radius." After installing the self-powered equipment in the boats, Soundcraft spent two days fine-tuning the irregularly-shaped coverage area using Meyer's SIM II Analyzer. Pro Line Professional Audio of Jakarta provided speakers for Planet Bali, a hot new Indonesian club which opened in early August. The club, featuring a full service restaurant with singing waiters in addition to its nightclub and karaoke facilities, is equipped with 6 MTS-4s and a CP-10. Emerald Sales' Robby Lopez reports from the Philippines that Meyer MSL-4's "performed to the maximum compared to other speaker boxes," at a recent two-day concert featuring popular Filipina vocalist Regine Velasquez. The system at the 12,000 capacity Folk Arts Theatre featured two clusters of seven MSL-4's, UM-1 and UPA-1 monitors, as well as several UPL self-powered units. "At a total of 14 boxes, the MSL-4's at the Folk Arts Theatre gave every seating area a clear sound," Lopez said enthusiastically. The concert was so successful that a repeat show is in the works. According to Lopez, "Meyer speakers were already tapped for the repeat by personal preference of the artist." America played a four-night stint in the Philippines using equipment supplied by Emerald Sales of Quezon City. Rene Cruz of Emerald commented that America's sound man, Bill Crook of SPL Sound, was "amazed with the MSL-4's." The set-up, comprised of 3 MSL-4's per side accompanied by a pair of 650-P's, provided coverage for a 600-seat venue packed to standing room only. Rene Cruz reports that Emerald Sales in the Philippines is currently doing a concert for Dionne Warwick and Burt Bacharach at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC). The concert system features Meyer MSL-4 Self-Powered Loudspeakers. One of the most popular live music venues in Tokyo, the Blitz Club, recently purchased a massive Meyer system featuring 4 MSL-5 Concert Series Loudspeakers, 8 DS-2 Mid-bass Loudspeakers, 12 650-R2 Concert Series Subwoofers, 8 MSL-2A Concert Series Loudspeakers and several Meyer controllers. Hibino installed the system. Click here for the whole story. Emerald Sales in the Philippines just finished a show in the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC),similar to the Oscar awards night called the "FAMAS" awards (Foundation Academy for Movies and Sciences) and used 4 MSL 4's per side and one MSL-4 per side as fills. The 4 podium microphones (two on each side), were practically in front of the speakers (14 feet high 12 feet deep from the microphones), with no feedback and sounded very crisp and clear, not to mention, effortless. Some comments were, "It sounded like listening to a very expensive HIFI system." December, 1997 |
