London-based rental company, Canegreen, supplied Self-Powered MSL-4 rigs and other Meyer gear for a variety of tours in 1997.

Mike Spratt, of British rental company Wigwam, gave MSL-4's glowing reviews after using self-powered speakers for the first time for sound reinforcement for the Christian "Champion of the World" festival at Wembley Stadium.

"The MSL-4's withstood torrential rain storms ," said Spratt. "I received compliments all day about the consistent quality of sound."

The festival featured 5 bands and attracted 50, 000 people. Configured for a stage in the round, the complete system included 206 various Meyer cabinets.

Rome's 10,000-capacity Olympic Stadium provided the setting for the first open-air performance of the opera Turandot, by Puccini. Grisby Music's Angelo Tordini reports that the outdoor sound was "...perfect. Never had response been so positive," he added.

Rental company Agora supplied the system for Turandot and aligned the final configuration with the SIM analyzer. The equipment list featured 2 clusters of 3 Self-Powered MSL-4 loudspeakers, 3 MSL-5 loudspeakers, 2 DS-2 mid-bass loudspeakers, and 2 UPA-1C loudspeakers. Further reinforcement consisted of 1 MSL-3 loudspeaker in the center with support from 6 650-R2 subwoofers. Stage monitoring was handled by 6 UM-1 monitors.

Cologne rental company Padco now owns the biggest Self-Powered Meyer stock in Germany. In addition to the CQ-1s and PSW-2s Padco purchased this September, the company also invested in a SIM System II. They strongly believe that this significant enlargement of their rental stock will further enhance the superior level of service they offer.

Rental company Stacks & Racks of Barcelona are using an impressive amount of Meyer equipment for Julio Iglesias' upcoming tour, reports Gaille Poullavec of Twin Cam Audio.

The system consists of 2 long-throw clusters with 2 stacks of MSL-5's and 4 stacks of DS-2's and 2 mid-throw clusters with 10 stacks of MSL-4's and 5 stacks of DS-2's. These will be supplemented by 24 stacks of MSL-2's used as down fills and two front fill systems comprised of 4 stacks of UPA-1C's with 8 650-R2 subwoofers.

Portugese rental company ALFASOM augmented their exisiting UPA-1C, 650-R2, and UM-1C stock with the recent purchase of their first self-powered PA system. The company works mainly on commercial presentations and conferences involving musical events. With the expanded stock including 8 MSL-4's, 4 PSW-2's, 4 650-P's, 12 UPA-1C's, 4 650-R2's, and 8 UM-1C's, ALFASOM now owns the biggest Meyer PA available for rental in Portugal.

Meyer Sound Europe relocated to Luton, Bedfordshire from its previous facilities in Harpendon, Hertsfordshire in September of 1997. The larger office space accomodates a growing staff that includes three new personnel appointments: James Bamlett heads the technical support department, while Suzy Gassick and Justin Banks jointly handle administration and operations.

"Europe is a booming market for Meyer Sound. Sales in the region are really flourishing, especially since the introduction of the Self-Powered Series," explains Mike Mann, Managing Director of Meyer Sound Europe. "The larger facility and staff increase Meyer's capacity to meet the growing demand, and serve our European clientele with the service and support they've come to expect from Meyer."
