Yoshi's Sounds as Good as it Looks

Meyer Sound PSM-2 Stage Monitors In Action at Yoshi's

When Herbie Hancock and his quartet inaugurated the new Yoshi's Nightclub at Oakland's Jack London Square on Saturday night, they were backed by a superb new sound system. The new Meyer system is unique in that it is an entirely self-powered PA system--no amps required.

The design and installation of the system was the result of close collaboration between Jim Norton of Meyer Sound Laboratories, audio consultants Tom Schindler of Charles Salter & Associates, Stephen Morris of Pro Media, and Yoshi's own mixer, Dan Pettit. It is comprised of one CQ-1 and one PSW-2 per side for the left and right mains, 3 CQ-2's hung in the center, 4 HM-1's mounted into the stage for front fills, and 4 PSM-2 self-powered stage monitors. Using the RMS Remote Monitoring System Network, the mixer can monitor all the hung speakers and identify at the console what is happening with each one. A Meyer LD-1A line driver gives the mixer level control and muting capabilities. The entire system was aligned upon installation using the Meyer Source Independent Measurement (SIM) system.

Yoshi's is a world class venue which hosts some of the biggest names in jazz and blues music. The new venue is slightly larger than the old Yoshi's on Claremont Avenue, but has retained the intimate environment which makes this such a unique place to see a show. According to Norton, the exclusively self-powered system, coupled with the RMS network, signals a "new era" in club sound.

Yoshi's decided to go with Meyer Sound after strong recommendations from their audio consultants, Charles Salter & Associates and Pro Media. Pettit says that he is constantly asked "What's the new place like?" He answers that, "in the old place we lit the way for our sound with oil lamps. Now we're using halogen headlights. The sound is simply fabulous!"
