Meyer at the Universidad de Lima, Peru

Z.U.M. is a unique space, purposely designed to host the entire gamut of entertainment events. A new and truly multi-functional 2,100-seat venue on the campus of the Universidad de Lima (Peru), ZUM (standing for, multi-purpose auditorium, in Spanish) is a below ground-level auditorium, malleable enough to host basketball or volleyball games, video conferences and seminars, and concert music. In other words, all sorts of events requiring amplified as well as unamplified sound. The inaugural program on May 27th of this year was a performance of Carl Orff's racy and exhilarating cantata, "Carmina Burana," with the university-based Orquesta Filarm—nica de la Universidad de Lima, vocal soloists, and the Coro Nacional.

ZUM derives its extreme flexibility from a number of variables: its retractable side-seats, its adjustable acoustic wall and ceiling panels, its configurable stage area, and its two moveable (backward and forward) speaker clusters--comprised of seven Meyer MSL-4's each, supplemented by six 650-P subwoofers per side, and one MSL-4 for front fill, all of which are controlled by a Meyer LD-1A.

Side fill monitor systems are comprised of two MSL-4's and one 650-P on each side of the stage. The Universidad also installed a complete Meyer stage monitor system comprised of six UM-1P's and 12 PSM-2's. All of the Meyer cabinets are connected to Meyer Sound's RMS network and are monitored through the host station at the FOH mix position. In addition, given all the multiple uses and configurations of the hall, ZUM felt that owning its own Meyer SIM System II analyzer was a necessity for keeping the sound reinforcement system in tune.

Through the advocacy of Eduardo Gra–a, Director of Administration & Logistics at the University, Meyer Sound's Scott Gledhill was asked to redesign the system using Meyer equipment. Abba's Technical Support Manager, Frank Martinez, was on-site at ZUM three times: once for an MSL-4 demo, a second time to survey the hall before the installation, and lastly with Meyer technical representative, Antonio Zacarias, to install the system over a three-week period in May. The installation period also encompassed extensive RMS and SIM System II training, taught by Meyer Sound Mexico's Director of Education, Mauricio Ramirez. The personal training was an element of the relationship that ZUM had not really counted on, but which they came to see as extremely valuable.

The SIM system training is developing into a foundation for future collaborative efforts between Meyer and the Universidad de Lima. Working together, they are establishing a sound engineering program that will be taught entirely in Spanish.
