Michigan Womyn's Music Festival
Take 650 secluded acres of forest and meadow, add a seasonal tent town complete with three stages and a sound system to please more than 6,000 enthusiasts, and throw in performances by the Indigo Girls, Sweet Honey in the Rock and the Topp Twins. What you've got is the annual Michigan Womyn's Music Festival, held this year from August 11th through August 16th deep in the north woods. "It was quite a scene," says Myrna Johnston of MJ Audio, Boston, who arrived at the Festival with her stock-pile of Meyer Sound gear. "It was all outdoors and the system worked beautifully. I was thrilled with it. I wasn't entirely surprised, just happy." Johnston, who formed her own company in 1983, recently added to her Meyer Sound gear inventory. "I started with 10 monitors," she says, "then went for the rest of it." The Self-Powered factor was an important consideration for her, Johnston adds. "It's pretty handy, convenient and efficient. It's conducive to these types of outdoors festivals." The system Johnston designed for the all-female Michigan event was a success all around, according to Festival producer Lisa Vogel. "The Meyer Sound system was absolutely brilliant," Vogel says. "It sounded awesome in the open-air woodland setting. The audience was aware of the clarity of the sound, and have given us great feedback. The artists were all in absolute love. I was proud to have such a great system headed up by one of the country's finest engineers at our Festival." Johnston also used her new Meyer system at Brooklyn's Caribbean Festival in August and at the Somerville Theatre for the September 25th performance by West African singing sensation Angelique Kidjo from Benin. "I'll use again in October at the Roxy in Boston for the Afro-Cuban All Stars," she says. "I'll use as much of it as is warranted in each location - it's been a great purchase."
