Meyer Sound Australia, working with Canberra production company Sound Advice, provided a Self-Powered UltraSeries sound system for the tenth anniversary performance of Skyfire X, a dazzling nighttime pyrotechnic display. Drawing 120,000 Canberrans to the shores of Lake Burley Griffin, the event featured a synchronized stereo simulcast by sponsoring radio station FM 104.7. Skyfire X took place on the evening of Sunday, March 8. The Meyer system was used to provide audio for the V.I.P. stand at the event.
"The sound was incredible," reported Steve Devine of Meyer Sound Australia. "This was one of the first opportunities for Australians to hear the Self-Powered UltraSeries outdoors. We received a lot of compliments on the clarity and stereo imaging of the system." The Meyer system consisted of 8 UPA-1P loudspeakers flown on towers and 4 USW-1P subwoofers placed in pairs at the base of each tower. A CP-10 parametric equalizer and LD-1A line driver provided system control.
Skyfire is part of the Canberra Festival, a ten-day celebration celebrating the 1913 founding of Australia's capital. The show was designed by renowned pyrotechnic Syd Howard, whose past credits include closing ceremonies for the Atlanta Olympic Games, on-stage effects for Guns n' Roses and AC/DC, and fireworks for the Hong Kong Handover Ceremony, which also featured a Self-Powered Meyer sound reinforcement system.
