News Briefs Pacific Rim 1998
Rene Cruz of EFX, a Manila rental company, reports: EFX was awarded the contract for Buhay!, a series of 100 performances at the Shangri-La Plaza Mall in conjunction with the 100-year Centennial Celebration of Filipino Independence. The performances are scheduled from May 3 through June 11 and encompass live bands, stage plays, ballet, and philharmonic and choral concerts. Korea's Sae-Jong Cultural Center installed an all-Meyer system supplied by Meyer's Korean distributor, Avix Trading, of Seoul. One of Asia's largest multi-purpose halls, the center hosts plays, concerts, and musicals. The system design resulted from a collaboration between Meyer Sound's Technical Support staff and Mr. Yun of Avix. The system's Self-Powered equipment includes 18 MSL-4 and seven CQ-2 loudspeakers. Other components are 5 UPM monitors, 5 CP-10 parametric equalizers, and 2 LD-1A line drivers. The system utilizes the SIM System II acoustical measurement system. Beijing Bei'ao Incorporation Department of Culture and Sports Development provided Meyer rigs for a number of Asian live shows this winter, reports Meyer distributor Jolly ProAudio Broadcast Engineering of Hong Kong. Emil Chau, a Chinese vocalist enjoying popularity in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Malaysia, performed in December at Beijing Capital Stadium. The system for the 18,000 capacity venue was based on Self-Powered CQ-2 loudspeakers, MSL-3 loudspeakers, and 650-R2 subwoofers. Japan's Acoustic Technical Laboratory (ATL) supplied all-Meyer systems, incorporating a total of 150 UPA-1C loudspeakers, for the newly-built Second National Theater. Located in Tokyo's Shinjuku district, the venue consists of three separate theaters: an Opera house, a mid-size hall, and a small theater. All three venues use SIM System II. It opened to the public in November of 1997. At 1,814 seats, the four-story Opera House is the largest of the three performance spaces. Fully equipped with an orchestra pit, a supertitle display system, and a prompter box, the wood-paneled theater is suitable for full-scale opera and ballet productions. Yamaha Sound Tech installed the house system, which featured 20 UPA-1C loudspeakers, 8 MSL-2A loudspeakers, 8 USW-1 subwoofers, and 8 650-R2 subwoofers. The mid-size Playhouse holds 1,038, and is mainly used for drama and modern dance performances. The proscenium stage can be coverted into an open-style performance space. 70 UPA-1Cs and 8 UPA-2Cs, supplemented by 16 UM-1Cs and 19 650-R2s, comprise the house system, installed by Matsushita Denki Sangyo (Panasonic). The smallest venue, the 468-seat house known as "The Pit," is a highly flexible performance space used for dramatic theater. The floor of the stage level is split by a mobile floor which moves both upward and downward, according to specific production needs. JRC (Nihon Musen) installed the 12 UPA-1Cs, 2 UM-1Cs, and 4 USW-1s providing sound reinforcement. Acoustic Technical Laboratories, Japan's Meyer distributer, plans to open an authorized center for the servicing and repair of Meyer equipment for their Japanese customers early in 1998. Preparations for the center began in the fall of 1997 and were coordinated with Meyer Customer Service Manager Pablo Espinosa. In December, ATL sent their service team to the Berkeley factory for a week of intensive on-site training. When ATL's center opens in 1998, it will accomodate the full range of servicing required by Meyer products. In addition to placing orders for MATE (Meyer Automatic Test Equipment) and SIM II machines, ATL has also invested in an anechoic chamber and a "piano box" for high-frequency driver testing. The center will repair damaged processors and mp amplifiers, and re-build high-frequency drivers. ATL's commitment to sophisticated test equipment means that they will also have the capacity to repair and re-calibrate HD-1 and HD-2 studio monitors, as well as being able to test entire speaker systems with SIM System II. Large Self-Powered Meyer Sound System Purchased by Quebec Entertainment New Investment Dollars from Singaporean Governmental Agency Allow for Upgraded Sound System Meyer Sound recently sold a substantial Self-Powered Series sound system to Quebec Entertainment of Singapore after Quebec sold a 50 percent stake of their company to the National Trade Union Congress (N.T.U.C.), a governmental agency of Singapore. Quebec, a sound and lighting equipment rental company, increased their rental inventory with brand new Meyer equipment that includes 8 MSL-4 Loudspeakers, 6 650-P Subwoofers, 6 CQ-1 Loudspeakers, a CP-10 Parametric Equalizer, and an LD-1A Line Driver. Mike Cooper, sales manager for Meyer Sound Asia, reports that Quebec Entertainment will expand its Meyer system again substantially in the near future. June, 1998 |
