Festival Viva la Radio

Every year in Monterrey, Mexico, the media group Multimedios Estrellas de Oro, which owns more than 100 radio & TV stations, newspapers, and movie theatres, organizes a large outdoor music festival called "Festival Viva la Radio." The festival takes place at the Stadium of the University of Nuevo Leon which, for this event holds just over 40,000 people.

This year's show, which began on the morning of July 2 and lasted all day until 10pm, was host to 30 popular artists including, Limite, Lucero, Pedro Fernandez, Lupe Esparza, Liberacion, Pesado, Tucanes de Tijuana, El Reencuentro, Moenia, Linda, Onda Vaselina.

To minimize the technical troubles one would normally encounter with presenting 30 bands in just 12 hours, 2 complete stages were placed side by side. Each stage measured 45 feet wide by 40 feet deep and had its own roof and separate FOH systems.

But just one PA system was hung from the left & right ground support towers and featured all self-powered 16 x MSL-4, 20 x 650-P arrays. Because the owners of the stadium were preparing for an upcoming soccer match, neither the concert goers nor the audio techs were allowed to stand on the grass field. To maximize the throw of the MSL-4s, the arrays were configured for narrow horizontal coverage and long vertical throw to reach the fans more than 350 ft from the stage.

Also a secondary sidefill and delay system featuring 7 MSL-4 per side was installed to complete the 360ƒ coverage needed to reach fans seated at the sides and rear of the stages. Meyer Sound Mexico's Maurico Ramirez provided system alignment using SIM System II, parametric EQs, digital delays and a Meyer LD-1A.

This year, like years past, all the audio gear was provided by Troya Eventos y Producciones, who are based in Monterrey. Troya's owners, brothers Raul & Roberto Aguilar were happy with the ease with which the MSL-4 system was set up. In previous years Troya always has had troubles installing their older, non-self-powered Meyer system quickly enough.

All of the visiting engineers commented on the smooth and uniform response of the system and were happy to see Meyer Sound staff participating in the event. By bring the SIM machnine this year, Mauricio was able to provide powerful and intelagible sound to all 40,000 fans.
