"Today Show" Summer Concert Series

"We've used the same Meyer Sound self-powered PA loudspeakers for two years now. The system has worked really, really well and by using the 8 pole mounted UPA-1Ps for fill we've been able to meet the PA demands of the rectangular shaped space."

Lead technician for Pro Mix

Starting on Friday, May 28, The NBC "Today Show" began hosting their Summer Concert Series at New York City's Rockefeller Center. The concerts, broadcasted live from 8:30 a.m.-9:00 a.m. EST every Friday, have featured such internationally renowned artists as: Blondie, Ricky Martin, Donna Summer, Jewel, Hootie and The Blowfish, and Sting, who will close the '99 concert series on Friday, September 24.

Providing the Meyer Sound self-powered loudspeaker systems for the 18 concert dates is Pro Mix out of Mt. Vernon, New York. Equipment featured at the popular outdoor concert series includes 2 650-Ps, 2 USW-1Ps, 8 CQ-1s, 2 CQ-2s used as sidefill on stage, as well as a host of 8 UPA-1Ps owned by NBC.

"We've used the same Meyer Sound self-powered PA loudspeakers for two years now," said Patrick Healy, lead technician for Pro Mix. "The system has worked really, really well and by using the 8 pole mounted UPA-1Ps for fill we've been able to meet the PA demands of the rectangular shaped space."

Jens McVoy, mix engineer for the concert series, added that even though the Rockefeller Plaza is an extremely challenging venue for a PA system, due to its concrete surroundings, that the Meyer Sound system handled the space very well. The system was able to adapt very easily in a situation where the audience was 20 to 30 feet closer than the loudspeakers were designed for without throwing off the response.

"We've had acts from rock'n'roll to rhythm and blues and the Meyer Sound system has worked perfectly," said McVoy. "Every band technician and audience member I've talked with after a performance said they had an amazing time and that the concert sounded great."
