Sang Nam Hall, LG Arts Center - Seoul, Korea

"The Meyer Sound self-powered boxes sound absolutely fabulous. The MSL-4's, CQ's and CQ's and UPA's, used in the right application, are some of the best sounding boxes I've ever heard. They very easy to work with, almost entirely predictable, and they don't break."

The LG Kangnam building (Seoul, Korea) is a 40-story, 140,000 square meter (1.5 million square feet) multi-use corporate headquarters facility for the LG Group, Korean computer and electronics giant. This glass, green granite, and stainless steel tower dovetails at the base with a multi-use performing arts complex, housing an art gallery, a retail arcade, banquet facilities, restaurants, an exhibition hall, and its central component, the 1,040-seat Sang Nam Hall for the performing arts. This spectacular new hall incorporates more than 34 Meyer Sound loudspeaker systems.

Five years in planning and construction, the LG Arts Center Sang Nam Hall (www.lgart.com) recently experienced its "Opening Festival" of cultural events that ran through August. "Overall, things have worked out beautifully," says Sound and Communication Systems project director, Tom Clark of Artec Consultants Inc. (NYC, NY). "From a sound system perspective, it's the most friendly space I have ever worked in. The combination of adjustable low-frequency absorption and high/mid-frequency absorption functions makes the room an almost perfect neutral space acoustically. The sound system is extremely powerful, and very well-tuned, so it works for everything from rock concerts and musical theater, to a single voice or instrumental soloist in front of acoustic ensembles.

The auditorium itself was designed as a world-class acoustic environment for use as a concert hall, as well as for events requiring amplified sound.

For amplified events, the Art Hall sound system was primarily designed around the traditional model of loudspeaker allocation for musical theater with a proscenium-based stereo left and right "band" system, and a central mono vocal system. "The vocal system is based on a center cluster with proscenium side-fills and delays, including apron front-fills and under-balcony speakers," says Clark. "The stereo orchestra system is based on the left and right side of the proscenium. "

The hall music system is comprised entirely of powered loudspeaker systems from Meyer Sound. Four Meyer MSL-4's, two left and two right, at the top of the proscenium provide the basis of this stereo "band" system. (Another pair is part of the vocal system for balcony coverage.) Three Meyer CQ-1 loudspeakers on either side of the proscenium provide main floor coverage. Two 650-P subwoofers are located on either side of the proscenium as well.

In addition to two MSL-4's, the vocal system comprises a single Meyer CQ-1 down-fill for the orchestra level, and two CQ-1's, one on each side of the proscenium just above stage level. A single Meyer HM-1, hung in the cluster position, is used for down-fill when audience seating replaces the orchestra pit. Clark and Bob McCarthy used Meyer Sound's SIM II system to tune the sound system.

"The Meyer Sound self-powered boxes sound absolutely fabulous," says Clark. "The MSL-4's, CQ's and CQ's and UPA's, used in the right application, are some of the best sounding boxes I've ever heard. They very easy to work with, almost entirely predictable, and they don't break."

The five-month long Opening Festival of events in Sang Nam Hall was conceived of as both a celebration of the Korean government's commitment to culture as a core economic strategy in the country's development and, through their support of the Arts Center project, a demonstration of LG's commitment to the same goals. Sang Nam Hall and the artists appearing in its first season are a bright symbol of what both the public and private sectors in Korea hope will be an era of cultural affluence.
