Audio Upgrade Brings Meyer Sound to St. Louis' Savvis Center
ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI - The Savvis Center, home of the St. Louis Blues hockey team, has installed a new audio system comprised of self-powered loudspeakers and subwoofers from Meyer Sound. Featuring over 30 of the manufacturer's long-throw MSL-4 and MSL-6 devices, the arena also showcases Meyer's DS-4P mid-bass loudspeaker and the TEC Award-winning PSW-6 cardioid subwoofer. "The design goal was to provide the highest level of intelligibility and concert-quality sound to every one of the Savvis Center's 18,000 seats via a precisely controlled point source system positioned above the scoreboard," says Meyer's Southeast Regional Sales Manager Rick Coleman of the project, who worked closely with Miami/Orlando/Las Vegas-based Pro Sound Inc. and the Meyer Sound Design Services team in Berkeley, CA, to define the Savvis Center's audio needs. With the installation of the Meyer Sound system and its PSW-6 subwoofers, the Savvis Center successfully overcame the sub-bass propagation problems often encountered in arenas of this size. Offering directional control of low frequencies, the PSW-6 is the first device of its type to exhibit a true cardioid coverage pattern throughout its entire operating range. Designed to steer acoustical energy away from the rear of its enclosure and present sub-bass information only in areas of intended coverage, the PSW-6 has a frequency response of 30 Hz-125 Hz, a maximum SPL rating of 140 dB peak, and an efficient front-to-back SPL ratio of over 15 dB. Meyer Sound's DS-4P mid-bass loudspeakers, which supplement frequencies between 70 - 200 Hz, provide the system with additional mid-bass headroom. Along with the performance attributes of the combined components, the Savvis Center found that the plug-and-play aspect of the Meyer Sound self-powered loudspeakers systems, along with Meyer's QuickFly rigging hardware, helped to cut installation time in half as well as bring the project in on time and according to budget. In addition to serving as home turf for Blues hockey games, the arena is a fixed stop for a variety of other events, including the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, and Disney on Ice. Savvis Center management sought out Pro Sound, Inc. for its installation and design services based upon the company's excellent track record in providing superior-quality and efficient systems for a variety of other high-profile sports venues throughout the country.
