Mickey Hart Premieres 5.1 DVD Audio Remixes With Meyer System
On October 24, 2001, the legendary percussionist Mickey Hart presented his DVD-Audio 5.1 Surround Sound remixes of Grateful Dead classics "American Beauty" and "Workingman's Dead" in a world premier listening event at the Fillmore in San Francisco. Hart is best known for his almost 30 years of extraordinary drumming for the Grateful Dead. He has composed scores, soundtracks and themes for movies, television and video including "Hearts of Darkness," "Apocalypse Now," "The Twilight Zone" and "The Next Step." Hart is also a dedicated musicologist and author with three books to his credit: Drumming at the Edge of Magic, Planet Drum (companion to the Grammy winning album of the same name) and Spirit into Sound: The Magic of Music. The 5.1 surround sound loudspeaker system was supplied by Meyer Sound and configured and aligned with SIM System II by Dave Dennison. The completely self-powered system consisted of six CQ-2 Narrow Coverage Main loudspeakers for the front left, center and right channels, and four CQ-1 Wide Coverage Main loudspeakers for the 2 rear channels. Six 650-P High-Power Subwoofers comprised the subwoofer system. In addition to presenting the new mixes of the two albums, the event also featured a question and answer session with Hart. He discussed his approach to the remixes of the enduring records with Tom Flye, chief engineer for the project, John Meyer, President and CEO of Meyer Sound, and others involved in the project. Tower Records, KFOG, The Good Guys, Panasonic, Dolby Labs, Grateful Dead Productions and Rhino Entertainment joined Meyer Sound in sponsoring the event. November, 2001 |
