Newtown Lounge Brings the Meyer Sound Difference to Montreal
To launch Montreal's latest club/lounge/restaurant creation, Newtown, nothing shy of a grand evening gala would do. The opening event, held on June 2, was hosted just before the Canadian Formula One Grand Prix and attracted a full house of guests including Montreal's elite, the Canadian press, "glitterati" and Principal Owners Craig Pollock and Jacques Villeneuve of F1 racing fame. Providing the pro-audio equipment for Newtown's multiple floors of entertainment was Solotech of Montreal, who specified roughly thirty self-powered Meyer Sound loudspeaker systems for the four-story site. "The club sounds just great," says Pascal Castonguay, project manager for Solotech. "The minute we put the system on, the customer was happy. We only had a few room adjustments and that was it. Boy George played there a couple of weeks ago as a DJ and he loved the system." Adds Castonguay, "It's plug and play. You plug the AC and signal in and it sounds good right away. For once, the EQs are really used to EQ the room, not the system. The fact that the box is protected removes a lot of headaches; the DJ can play really loud and he is unlikely to blow a thing." The lower level club features a deep-set illuminated dance floor that quickly immerses club-goers in the bass of four Meyer Sound 650-P subwoofers. For the room's main system a combination of four CQ-2 full range loudspeakers are employed in conjunction with UPM-1Ps for delay fill in the raised seating around the perimeter of the room. On the main level sits a cocktail lounge that features a large central bar with a wide variety of wines and liqueurs to please even the most refined palates. The system design comprises twelve UPM-1Ps and four UMS-1P subwoofers distributed around the bar aimed outward toward the lounge area. "With this system, we tried to recreate a good Hi-Fi system with professional speakers," commented Castonguay. "We achieved it with UPMs and UMS-1Ps. They have all of the softness you want when sitting down on a couch, chatting and having a port or a martini." The second level houses a gourmet restaurant featuring the latest culinary delights while the roof level terrace offers guests an ever-changing mix of DJ stylings reinforced by four Meyer Sound UPA-1Ps and two USW-1P subwoofers. "For the terrace, since it's used only half of the year, we looked for a solution where the customer could use the speakers for a press conference in the club or in the lounge," says Castonguay. "That's why we went for the UPAs. They are very versatile." All levels, with the exception of the restaurant, feature their own DJ booths and offer a serving of the hottest talent in the Montreal club scene. "The three Meyer Sound systems are all performing exceptionally well and we have, without a doubt, established a new standard for quality in this type of venue," says Andrew Hope of GerrAudio, Meyer Sound's distributor in Canada. Contributing to Newtown's success are Commercial Director Martin Poitras and Jean-Pierre Da Costa Li, local partner and general director. August, 2001 |
