Meyer Sound Reinforces International Harmony at the 2001 World Scholar-Athlete Games
The world's brightest and most gifted young scholars, performing artists and athletes assembled at the University of Rhode Island this summer to share their diverse talents at the World Scholar-Athlete Games (WSAG). During the intensive ten-day event, more than 2000 participants specializing in any of 13 sports or 7 cultural arts programs joined 400 coaches, instructors and volunteers to discuss global issues and take part in programs designed to foster international understanding. Nearly 160 countries and all 50 states were represented. Meyer Sound, as a Gold Sponsor of the event, provided sound reinforcement for all activities held at the Games in conjunction with MJ Audio of Boston. Legendary R&B artists The Temptations performed live at the opening ceremonies, which also featured a colorful parade of Games participants and a fireworks extravaganza. The closing ceremonies included performances by the WSAG choir, symphony and dancers. Daily audio productions included sporting events, orchestra concerts, theatrical productions, dance performances, large group discussions and literary readings – all of them using Meyer Sound self-powered loudspeakers. Chief Operating Officer of the Games, Ramsey Baker, was delighted with the results. "With the assistance of Meyer Sound and MJ Audio, we assembled the best equipment and the best production staff possible. The combination of these two companies helped us meet the overwhelming sound needs of the Games with ease." The arts events at the Games were designed and coordinated by Jerah Coviello, Director of Arts and Culture for WSAG. "We started out looking for sound reinforcement for the two big ceremonies, but after Meyer Sound got involved, everything worked really well and they ended up doing sound for the whole week, including all the daily assemblies and all the theme day discussions." Brian Coviello, Northeast Regional Sales Manager for Meyer Sound, and Myrna Johnston from MJ Audio in Boston, designed the system. At one of the theme day discussions, Coviello spoke to the music students about careers in audio. "The students were very curious about their options in the music and audio industries," Coviello observed. "They had excellent questions – we discussed everything from technical production to studio engineering to working for a manufacturer." On each side of the stage in Meade Stadium, used in the opening and closing ceremonies, there were six MSL-4 Horn-Loaded Long-Throw Loudspeakers and four 650-P High-Power Subwoofers for the main system. A CQ-1 Wide Coverage Main Loudspeaker was used for front fill, and outside fill to the wide arena was accomplished with one CQ-1 and one 650-P per side. Stage monitors included an MSL-4 and a 650-P for left and right stage fill, and six UPM-1P Ultra-Compact Wide-Coverage Loudspeakers and a USW-1P Compact Subwoofer arranged on the floor. The expert technical staff of MJ Audio also outfitted the University gymnasium, the venue for numerous concerts and guest speakers during the Games, with two CQ-1s and two 650-Ps per side and six UPA-1Ps flown overhead, plus a monitor system consisting of two UPM-1Ps and a USW-1P. In addition, numerous UPM-1P systems were used throughout the week for spoken word events at various locations on the University campus. The World Scholar-Athlete Games are just one event in a growing network of Scholar-Athlete Games held in the US, Europe, the Middle East and the Pacific. "As the world's largest international sporting and cultural event for young people, the Scholar-Athlete Games offer enormous promise to future generations," said Tim Chapman, Director of Marketing at Meyer Sound. "We are proud to be associated with them and their spirit of global cooperation." October, 2001 |
