Audio Electronics Mattijsen (AEM), exclusive distributor for Meyer Sound products in the Netherlands, was established in 1979 by husband and wife team Johan and Geeke Mattijsen, with the aim of providing a high level of expertise and service to professional audio end users.

In 1990 the Mattijsen's sons, Eric and Roland, joined the company after apprenticeships at international pro audio companies including Renkus Heinz, Australian Monitor, Sonosax and Micron. In January 2000, ownership of the company was transferred to Eric and Roland.

Located in the small village Duivendrecht, south of Amsterdam and 10 minutes from Schiphol Airport, AEM is based in a 1,000 square meter renovated farmhouse, employing a staff of 14 people to handle the import, sales and rental of pro audio equipment and related communication systems for the Dutch market. A highly skilled technical department carries out servicing and repairs, and the sales team organizes regular demonstrations and training sessions on new products and technologies for dealers and end users. AEM views its exclusive Meyer Sound distributorship as an opportunity to expand into international tours and installations.

The company's first purchase of a Meyer Sound system was in the early eighties, but since 1996 AEM has been a full-fledged Meyer Sound dealer, selling the products for fixed installation in theaters and related venues. "We have a good deal of competition in this market, but we've been doing surprisingly well," says Roland Mattijsen "The reason we pursued the exclusive distribution is simple: Meyer Sound is without doubt one of the top loudspeaker manufacturers. It's a highly innovative company, but one that also actually manages to mold these innovations into practical products. The fact that Meyer Sound pursues the best possible solution, and not necessarily the highest sales volumes, fits in perfectly with our strategy."

Among the AEM staff dedicated to Meyer Sound products are Eric Mattijsen (system design), Michel van de Vall (service and support) and Rene Driessen (head of technical department). Overall Meyer Sound Product Manager will be the newly appointed Jasper Ravesteijn, returning to AEM after a 3-year leave for the United States. Says Ravesteijn, "I have been very fortunate to work the last couple of years in the North-East US pro-audio market. Now coming back and getting to work with Meyer and the innovative M-Series array systems and tools like MAPP means exciting times, to say it mildly!"

The AEM philosophy is based on service and added value. "We're seeking long-term relationships," says Roland. "For our clients that means we play a supporting role, enabling them to do their work as best they can. We will offer the full complement of training with the help of Meyer Sound including SIM school, MAPP training, rigging, and practical line array do's-and-don'ts. Also we maintain a large inventory of spares including some complete products for instant replacement on location, an in-house technical department which receives regularly factory training, a 24 hour emergency service and assistance on high-profile events. To people's surprise, we sort of enjoy being called upon in an emergency. Of course it can be stressful sometimes, but that rewarding feeling afterwards is not easily surpassed."

Among AEM's Meyer Sound installations during 2002 were eight UPA-1P Compact Wide Coverage loudspeakers, two USW-1P Compact subwoofers and six UPM-1P Ultra-Compact Wide Coverage loudspeakers into a multi-functional 1,200-seat theater at the Efteling, the largest and oldest theme park in the Netherlands. The Efteling, established in 1933, is continuously expanding, drawing millions of people every year. The theater, which features mechanical puppet shows, will stage in-house productions during the summer season and be available for commercial use during the winter.

AEM has also recently installed seven UPA-1Ps and two 650-P High-Power subwoofers into the Theater Terneuzen, and has supplemented existing installations at the Schouwburg de Doelen in Rotterdam, the Concertzaal Tilburg and De Oosterpoort in Groningen with UPAs and USWs. Early 2003 will see installs like Schouwburg Helmond, Schouwburg Hoorn and the prestigious, world famous Koninklijk Concert Gebouw in Amsterdam.

The company's distribution line also includes Schoeps, Lectrosonics, Harrison and HHB, and it also holds semi-exclusive dealerships for Yamaha digital mixing consoles, Digidesign ProTools and TC
