TC Furlong
T.C. Furlong, Inc. started out in 1973 as a small sound system manufacturer in Highland Park, Illinois, with a product line named Steamer Speakers. At the time, few places would rent professional sound equipment, so T.C. Furlong would rent not only the products they manufactured, but other equipment essential to a modern sound system. Today, the company concentrates primarily on delivering professional audio systems for corporate presentations, high-end business conferences, fine arts events (such as legitimate theater productions), and music events. "We've been fortunate enough to be successful without expending our energy in self-promotion," says company founder and owner, T.C. Furlong. "High-quality clients come to us almost exclusively by word-of-mouth referral." Furlong formed the company around a basic observation. There are two kinds of companies, he notes: the kind that put their efforts into marketing and gathering new business, and the kind that put their efforts into customer service and satisfaction. "Long ago, I decided that we would build long-term relationships with our customers. Some companies accept the notion that customer attrition is 'normal.' We don't. Our larger customers have been with us a long time." The company has built its reputation by delivering much more than typical "box-house" service. "We always ask what the customer is going to use the system for," says Furlong. "For both rental and sales, we take a full-system overview." Essential to this approach is careful consideration of a system's functionality and its value to the customer. Again, Furlong takes the long-term view of the company-client relationships: "I see our job as using our years of experience to take the customer down the right decision path," he says. T. C. Furlong's commitment to system utility and value for the customer has made Meyer Sound equipment the company's choice for many critical applications. Meyer Sound Equipment "First of all, Meyer powered systems provide real advantages of functionality and long-term value for the customer... the powered design makes things easier for the user, and the innovative nature of the design puts the customer on a continuous upgrade path with the company. "Consistency-from product to product, and from box to box. This is a defining characteristic of Meyer equipment. All Meyer products are held to the same standards of performance. And every box that bears the same model number has identical performance characteristics. This is extremely important for critical applications... For the Ford Motor Company arena event, we chose the 650-P subwoofer because a defined, controlled low-end was crucial. The six 650-Ps added quite a bit to the musical excitement needed for the show. "When used with lavaliere mics Meyer's loudspeakers offer a substantial improvement in vocal intelligibility over conventional loudspeaker systems. "We have 30 Meyer self-powered loudspeakers in our inventory for demo and rental because we think it's important to be able to do a full-system demo for a customer. Our ability to show customers exactly what they will be getting drives our rental business, and it fuels sales as well. Customers who purchase their own systems see their business grow and, contrary to what you might think, instead of this cutting into our rental business, our customers' success feeds our success and we become their suppliers for even larger systems."
