"The M Series on Broadway" a Hit

The 611-seat John Jay Theater provided a realistic, small-house setting for the Meyer product demonstrations. Systems configured for the sessions were left/right M2D (ten plus one M2D-Sub flown per side), left/right M1D (ten plus two M1D-Sub flown per side), two M1D on the stage lip, and eight MM-4 across the stage front.

In early October, Meyer Sound loudspeakers grabbed the spotlight when a veritable who's who of New York theatre and audio-visual sound professionals gathered for "The M Series on Broadway" product demonstration. This special listen-and-learn event, held at New York University's John Jay Theater, featured an in-depth introduction to the new M2D Compact Curvilinear Array loudspeaker, the M1D Ultra-Compact Curvilinear Array loudspeaker and the MM-4 Ultra-Compact Wide-Range loudspeaker, along with associated subwoofers and rigging components.

The two hour-long sessions (one morning and one afternoon) were sponsored by Meyer Sound and facilitated by logistical support from Sound Associates of New York. Meyer Sound technical support manager John Monitto and western regional sales manager Jim Sides hosted brief technical presentations prior to the product demonstrations. Also attending on the company's behalf were director of marketing Tim Chapman, North American sales director Greg McVeigh and northeastern regional sales manager Sandy Macdonald.

"The sessions went very well," summarizes Macdonald. "Nearly all the people we wanted to see showed up, which was impressive considering how busy their schedules are. New York theatre is coming back to life in a big way, and this event has planted seeds that will come to fruition in the near future."

During the demo sessions, the arrays and fills were used both alone (with and without subs) and in conjunction with the front fills.

The technical presentations covered the essentials of Meyer Sound self-powered technology, MAPP Online (Multipurpose Acoustical Prediction Program) and basic line array theory.

Domonic Sack of Sound Associates found there was a very high level of acceptance at the close of the sessions. "The demo gave full validity to the smaller line arrays," he reports. "Some people there were skeptical because of the size, but the arrays worked very well and generated a lot of interest. We've pulled rentals already because of the demos."

The sessions also effectively showcased the flexibility of the products, Sack maintains. "We showed how the M1D can be used in different configurations, in an array, as front fill or underbalcony. It performs beautifully for all three."

Sack provided overall logistical coordination for the event, with Sound Associates' Daryl Kral supervising the installations. Full cooperation from the staff at NYU's John Jay School of Criminal Justice also contributed to the success of the day's events.

The only person, apparently, to come away from the day with less than he expected was Meyer Sound's Sandy Macdonald. "I had to let go of my M1D demo system," he laments. "One of the rental companies begged for it, and now it's going straight over to the New Jersey Performing Arts Center."
