Florida Church Blessed with M2Ds for Christmas Santa arrived a few months early at the First Baptist Church in Fort Lauderdale, bringing in his sack a new Meyer Sound M2D compact curvilinear array system along with eight tiny M1D ultra-compact curvilinear array cabinets for choir monitoring and front fills. The system arrived just in time to provide glorious sound for the church's 20th annual Christmas Pageant, a dauntingly large-scale production – justly famed throughout South Florida – that involves multiple stage sets, exquisite costuming, and more than 600 musicians and performers drawn from the large and multi-talented congregation. Meyer Sound a Tradition at Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade Next to carving the turkey, watching the giant balloon-filled Macy's Parade is surely the most enduring Thanksgiving Day tradition in American homes. Countless millions have seen the parade on television since it was first broadcast by NBC in 1948, and in recent years the biggest crowds along the route – concentrated around TV camera locations at either end – have heard the stirring sounds of the parade through Meyer Sound loudspeakers. MAPP Online Tames Acoustics at Lions Forum Cement floors. Cinderblock walls. A square floor plan. Put it all together and you've got the kind of acoustical conditions that can make precise control over sound reflection next to impossible. It's not a situation you want to face without some serious analysis to guide loudspeaker selection and configuration. So when George Relles of George Relles Sound in Eugene, Ore., was preparing for the 27th Annual USA/Canada Lions Leadership Forum in Portland's Convention Center, he turned to the Meyer Sound MAPP Online acoustical prediction program for help in planning his sound reinforcement strategy. The results, he says, were "quite astounding." Read More » |

Meyer Keeps Krall Concert Hot in Iceland As a top-selling jazz singer – and one of the few such artists in recent memory to climb the pop charts – Diana Krall is known for the nuance and intimacy of her vocal stylings. Krall's fans come to her concerts with expectations shaped by her recordings, ready to revel in every syllable. But as her popularity has grown, so too have the venues in which she appears, thereby increasing the challenge of reaching the entire audience without compromising the subtlety of her delivery. Dave Lawler handled that challenge as front-of house mixer and Meyer Sound SIM engineer for Krall's recent European tour, working with a wide variety of sound reinforcement systems across 22 locations. Without a doubt, Lawler asserts, it was the systems featuring Meyer Sound loudspeakers that made it easiest to both project and protect the character of Krall's performance. Read More » |

MM-4 Does Lip Service at North Shore North Shore Music Theatre in Beverly, Mass., has installed a new stage lip system comprising 24 Meyer Sound MM-4 miniature wide range loudspeakers. The new system took care of a nagging problem that had beset the venue for several years: the front row ticket holders were getting less than first-rate sound. "The stage lip speakers had been the weakest link in our audio system for some time," admits John Stone, the theatre's sound department supervisor and resident sound designer. "We had an older 70-volt system up there that wasn't too good to begin with, and it had taken a beating over the years. We searched around for a while and finally decided that the Meyer MM-4s were the way to go." Read More » |

Meyer Sound and McCune Make Magic Monterey Jazz Festival Since its inception in 1958, the Monterey Jazz Festival has played host to a comprehensive "Who's Who" of jazz giants and witnessed countless historic musical moments, earning the annual event a reputation as one of the world's most prestigious music festivals. In its 46th year, the weekend-long concert series boasted more than 500 artists on five stages, ranging from the delicate solo guitar of Ralph Towner to a plethora of big bands, from high school to professional level. The audience listened to every one of these acts through Meyer Sound speakers provided by San Francisco's McCune Audio/Video/Lighting. Having supplied sound systems for the festival nearly every year since it started, McCune was well acquainted with meeting the needs of the event's variety and reputation. Sound Supervisor Mike Neal has worked the festival for McCune for so many years the only way he can date his tenure there is by noting the earliest stage credential he can find…which is from 1970. Meyer System Engulfs Audience in WJD Wetherspoon Installs MM-4 sicked Wizardry Distinguished New York sound designer Tony Meola is known for creating theatrical audio systems that are "transparent" or "invisible." However, those two terms take on a different shade of meaning when a show is set in Oz – where things aren't always what they seem or where they seem – as opposed to a show set in, well, Kansas. That crucial distinction explains, at least in part, why Meola placed over 150 Meyer Sound loudspeakers all around – and even underneath – the audience for the pre-Broadway engagement of the new musical Wicked at San Francisco's Curran Theatre. After all, when in Oz, one must allow for all sorts of sonic wizardry. Read More » |

Meyer Sound System Best in Class at U of Washington When the Center for Digital Arts and Experimental Media ("DXARTS") at the University of Washington set out to upgrade its concert sound capabilities, technical coordinator Chad Kirby faced a tough assignment. The system's requirements were defined by two professors — Richard Karpen and Juan Pampin — who are both composers and researchers in computer music, and thus knew not only how they wanted the system to sound but also what specifications were needed to achieve that performance. In addition, the system had to be portable, easy to fly, and extremely consistent from cabinet to cabinet. Kirby did his homework, finding several options for the three of them to evaluate. When the grading was done, Meyer Sound was at the head of the class. Read More » |

Heavenly Sound at Fort Smith's FUMC Church architecture from the early 1920s may be inspirational, but the sound quality of vintage PA systems is usually less than divine. So when the congregation of the First United Methodist Church of Fort Smith, Ark., set out to restore their 1,100-seat sanctuary to its original glory, they hoped to simultaneously bring the church's sound system up to contemporary standards. The challenge was to address longstanding issues of intelligibility and reliability without detracting from the sanctuary's visual character. The answer, designed and installed by Digital World Productions of Rogers, Ark., was a system based on custom-painted M1D Ultra-Compact Curvilinear Array, UPM-1P Compact Wide Coverage and UPM-2P Compact Narrow Coverage loudspeakers from Meyer Sound. Meyer Sound Self-Powered UPM-1Ps Hit the Ceiling at Marriott Plenum-mount ceiling loudspeaker systems have been, for all practical purposes, the exclusive domain of distributed 70-volt transformer-tapped technology. Until now. At the new Woodlands Waterway Marriott Hotel near Houston, Texas, an unorthodox new design has ditched the old transformer-based system and opted for digital processing and matrixing with direct feeds to a phalanx of Meyer Sound self-powered loudspeakers. Is this the start of a revolution in the ceiling? Read More » |

SB-2s Defy Cacophony at Detroit Auto Show The multichannel music and sound effects tracks were reproduced by four UPM-1Ps hidden inside the truck, two 650-P subwoofers underneath it, four CQ-2s overhead, and additional contributions from nearby SB-2s, CQ-2's and 650-P subwoofers that were matrixed into the program during the show. This past January, more than 880,000 visitors swarmed into Detroit's Cobo Center to see the latest in automotive technology on display at the North American International Auto Show. What these visitors did not see – though most heard it – was a significant breakthrough in audio technology. Tucked away behind scrims over the Dodge booth, six Meyer Sound SB-2 Parabolic Wide-Range Sound Beams created tightly defined soundscapes in open space, each separated aurally from the others and from the surrounding din of the exhibit hall. The Egg Hatches New Meyer Sound System in New York A new surround sound system by Meyer Sound, installed late in 2002, marks a turning point in the 24-year history of The Egg, an architecturally daring center for the arts in Albany, New York. In prior years, with precious few exceptions, live music performances coming to the Egg either had to load in their own production or have a system hired in. Unfortunately, confronted with the hall's wide seating arc and uninspiring acoustics, the temporary rig du jour rarely gave full satisfaction. Read More » |

Barrage Fiddles About with Meyer Sound Barrage has been described as Stomp meets Riverdance with violins, although according to a reviewer for the Seattle Times, "Such a neat summary covers the energetic dancing, inventive percussion and instrumental prowess, but doesn't quite capture the entertaining result." Barrage has stormed out of the Canadian West – seven fiddles blazing across a potpourri of styles from classical to Klezmer – to captivate crowds on a tour of the continent. One crucial "instrument" that helped convey the dynamic of the music to the audiences was a self-powered reinforcement system from Meyer Sound. Read More » |

Meyer Sound M1D Bridges the Centuries at St. Anthony's Though strikingly contemporary in its elegant simplicity, St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church in The Woodlands, Texas also resonates — literally! — with the architecture of 14th century cathedrals: soaring ceilings, cruciform architecture and the abundant use of stone and glass. However, during the youth-oriented Life Team Mass on Sunday nights, the amplified sounds inside St. Anthony's are undeniably from the 21st Century. The demanding task of reconciling these two acoustically opposing eras falls principally on a sound reinforcement system based around M1D Ultra-Compact Curvilinear Array loudspeakers from Meyer Sound.
