U.S. Patent Office Allows Claims Covering Meyer Sound MAPP Online Method

The United States Patent and Trademark Office has allowed the claims of a patent application filed by Meyer Sound pertaining to the company's MAPP Online acoustical prediction software. The patent describes a method of providing acoustical response predictions for a modeled loudspeaker system over a communications network. In the case of MAPP Online, an Internet-enabled client-server system lets modeling software running on a powerful server at Meyer Sound's headquarters provide the computational "back end" to GUI software running on the user's local computer. Allowance of the claims is a significant step preceding the award of a patent. The patent, when issued, will be the 35th U.S. or international patent issued to Meyer Sound since its founding in 1979. Houston Church Reaches New Heights with M1D System

When Houston, Texas' Church in the Heights decided to upgrade their sound system as part of a recent remodel, there were multiple challenges their new loudspeakers would have to meet. The system needed to deliver both power and clarity for multi-generational worship services that blend traditional and contemporary styles, and precise pattern control was crucial to keeping sounds off the highly reflective vaulted ceiling and walls in the 400-seat sanctuary. As if these functional requirements were not sufficiently daunting, the entire system had to be small enough to "vanish into the woodwork" and not disturb the painstakingly restored look of the 1950s-era sanctuary. It was a tall order made short work of by a small complement of Meyer Sound's M1D ultra-compact curvilinear array cabinets. Read More »

Developers in Las Vegas love replicating far away places and cultures, from Paris to New York to the Arthurian legend of Excalibur. The United States' neighbor to the north has been exempt from such cloning so far, but Canada showed some of its exotica when a wacky bit of Toronto arrived at the Mandalay Bay one night in March to rock the Events Center down: Barenaked Ladies had come to town. Meyer Sound Germany

Carving out market segment in the saturated German loudspeaker market presents a formidable task. "The market is very mature, to say the least," says Thomas Züllich, managing director of Meyer Sound Germany. "We must have 30 manufacturers in Germany, plus aggressive marketing here by the overseas companies. For example, when you go to the ProLight + Sound show, you see entire halls filled with only loudspeakers!" Read More »

Meyer Sound Powers Pavarotti in Mexicali

Transforming a dry lakebed in Baja California into a concert setting worthy of one of the world's most renowned tenors was the formidable task the city of Mexicali took on for its 100-year anniversary celebration, "La Noche del Sol." To commemorate its centennial, the city turned to its desert surroundings, mounting an evening of orchestra and song featuring Luciano Pavarotti performing for a seated audience of 40,000. Set on a remote patch of flat, parched earth ringed by jagged mountains miles in the distance, the event posed numerous technical and logistical challenges, including mid-day temperatures over 110°F. But despite the heat, the sound crew was able to keep its cool with a powerful, reliable self-powered reinforcement system from Meyer Sound. Read More »

Meyer Sound Makes Fannie Mae Walkathon a Stroll

Stretching from the U.S. Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial, the National Mall in Washington, D.C., is the symbolic heart of American civic life, as well as a natural gathering place that has long provided a high-profile setting for diverse public events. No surprise, then, that the Mall is home to the annual Help the Homeless Walkathon sponsored by the Fannie Mae Foundation, which raises awareness of and funds for homeless service providers in the Washington metropolitan area. With participants congregating in a several square-block area, the Walkathon requires a clean, powerful sound reinforcement system with intelligibility for speeches and plenty of kick for music. Philadelphia-based Clear Sound handled sound needs for this year's event with a Meyer Sound system whose self-powered MSL-4 horn-loaded long-throw loudspeakers allowed easy deployment of both mains and wireless-fed delays. Bigger Sound for Broadway's 'Little Shop'

When Little Shop of Horrors opened for business on Broadway, the Henson-animated star of the show — a bloodthirsty exotic plant — was much bigger, bolder and more sophisticated than its off-Broadway predecessor. The new production's sound was sized to match: more than 40 self-powered Meyer Sound loudspeakers create an audio experience that is expansive and assertive, yet with an open and unprocessed quality to complement the show's sixties "girl group" rock musical style. It all began modestly in 1996 as "two guys in a green truck." Since then, Clark ProMedia of Cumming, Ga., has grown to become one the Southeast's leading design/build firms for performance technology systems. By any standard, the pace of recent expansion has been remarkable. In 2001, for example, Clark ProMedia completed seven projects; by early 2003, more than 25 booked projects were up on the board – mostly in the worship market – with additional proposals out for consideration. Meyer Sound System Rewards Faith at Phoenix Church

Faith comes by hearing," says Tommy Robertson, sound department manager at the Phoenix First Assembly of God. Intended to explain the importance of spoken word in sound reinforcement for worship, his comment applies just as well to the recent installation of a complete Meyer Sound system in First Assembly's 6,000-seat sanctuary. Designed using Meyer's MAPP Online acoustical prediction program, and featuring Meyer's new MILO high-power curvilinear array, the system was chosen after an on-site shootout with other major manufacturers. Having heard the system in service, Robertson has become a confirmed Meyer Sound convert. Read More »

Meyer Powers Surround Matrix for Sydney Opera House Premiere

Sydney Opera House is not only a busy performing arts center, but also one of the world's best-known architectural landmarks. With the distinctive "white sails" of its roofline creating a commanding presence on Sydney's waterfront, the building is a star in its own right, making it a fitting venue for the high-profile premiere of a major motion picture like The Matrix Revolutions. But it's no small challenge to transform a hall such as SOH's Opera Theatre – designed for opera and ballet –- into a suitable sonic setting for the full-throttle 5.1-channel soundtrack of a contemporary action film. "It was essential to the success of this show that every seat had great sound with full surround coverage," says David Claringbold, head of Sydney Opera House's sound department. To make it work, the department drew on its longstanding experience with self-powered loudspeakers from Meyer Sound, crafting a system that delivered both clarity and power for a full-impact experience. Meyer Sounds proves a Natural for Open-air Orchestral Concert in Latvia

Sometimes sound reinforcement isn't so much about simple audibility as it is about presence and detail. A case in point is the symphonic music series each summer in Jurmala, a Baltic resort some 12 miles from the Latvian capitol of Riga. The series takes place in the Dzintari concert hall, a 2000-seat venue with open sides under a wooden roof. And while an orchestra can be heard throughout without amplification, front-of-house mixing engineer Andris Uze says that use of a Meyer Sound system makes the concert experience more involving, bringing the music closer to the audience while maintaining the natural sound of instruments and voices. Meyer Sound Deployed with Vienna Philharmonic in Seoul Stadium

There is a huge difference between the pumped-up pandemonium of a world cup soccer match and the subtle detail of a world-class orchestral concert. Yet venues built for the former are sometimes pressed into service for the latter, and it can be a major challenge to ensure that the resulting sound does justice to the performers. When the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Zubin Mehta, came to South Korea's Seoul World Cup Stadium, that challenge fell to sound system contractor MBC Media Tech. To meet the requirements for power, fidelity, and control, MBC chose self-powered loudspeakers from Meyer Sound. Read More »
