17th Gulf Games Ceremony Inspires with Meyer Sound Power
The spectacular opening ceremonies of the 17th Gulf Cup games, presented in Doha, Qatar, dramatically symbolized the new, positive vision that is taking hold across this region. With help from a dazzling display of technology, the inspiring event highlighted mutual cooperation, celebration of common cultural roots, and peaceful competition through sport among the eight nations of the Arabian Peninsula. To convey this message of hope with full impact throughout the 20,000-seat Al-Sadd Stadium, the event producers employed advanced AV technology to an extraordinary degree — often with astonishing effect. The entire playing surface was covered with a giant screen (80,000 square meters), which reflected images from 42 projectors and the colorful patterns of more than 570 lighting instruments. Uniform, high-impact sound was delivered throughout the seating areas by a temporary audio system configured from more than 50 Meyer Sound self-powered loudspeakers. For power and coverage of most seating areas, the system relied on arrays configured from a total of 12 MILO 120 high-power expanded coverage curvilinear array loudspeakers. Additional clusters totaling 16 M2D compact curvilinear arrays filled in as needed to assure smooth coverage. Low-end power was provided by six M3D-Sub directional subwoofers, as well as M2D-Sub compact subwoofers, while performers on the field heard production sound clearly through a complement of 12 UM-100P wide coverage stage monitors. The entire event was conceived, designed and directed by Mr. Sharif Hashisho, who also serves as managing director of Qatar Vision, Meyer Sound's distributor in Qatar. Other participating companies included Auditore, ETC, Flash Art and Magnum. More than 2,000 people were involved in the event production, including 1,300 volunteers, 500 staff members, and a technical crew of 200. Mr. Hashisho's objective in creating the ceremony was to establish a technical and artistic benchmark for all such events in the region. In addition to the usual protocol ceremonies and speeches, the event included an uplifting, emotional message that centered on the return of Iraq to the Cup games. (Iraq had been suspended following the 1990 invasion of Kuwait.) To honor hopes for the future freedom and stability in the nation, the presentation concluded with a performance by Iraqi singer Kazem Al-Saher and a moving ceremony with 1,500 Qatari children, each holding a candle and, together, forming a heart shape on the screen-covered playing field. Participants in the 17th Gulf Cup games were Bahrain, Iraq, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, and Yemen. The games stretched over a two-week period and included competitions in handball, basketball, volleyball and football (soccer). Completed late last year, Doha's Al-Sadd Stadium is among the many new facilities recently completed, or currently under construction, in preparation for Qatar's hosting of the 2006 Asian Games. Mr. Hashisho already has been selected as a Director of Ceremonies and Cultural Events on the Doha Asian Games Orgainizing Committee. In this role, Hashisho will be responsible for directing and managing the opening and closing ceremonies of 15th Asian Games in 2006. March, 2005 |
