Meyer Sound will have much to celebrate at this year's Audio Engineering Society (AES) Convention in New York City when CEO/President John Meyer is presented with the society's prestigious Silver Medal Award in recognition of his "outstanding achievements in the field of audio engineering" during Opening Ceremonies on Friday, October 5, at 12:00 p.m.

The Silver Medal Award recognizes the considerable impact Meyer's innovative loudspeaker designs have had on the industry, starting in the late 1960s with his Glyph loudspeaker and continuing through the 2006 release of the M'elodie ultracompact high-power curvilinear array loudspeaker. (During the convention, M'elodie is contending for a 2007 TEC Award in the category of "Outstanding Technical Achievement, Sound Reinforcement Loudspeaker Technology," the company's 25th nomination in the TEC Awards' 23 years.) The Silver Medal Award has been presented to a long string of audio pioneers such as John Mullin, Robert Moog, Ray Dolby, and James A. (Andy) Moorer.

The award is not the first honor bestowed on Meyer by AES: in 1985 he was named a Fellow of the AES. Meyer Sound Executive Vice President and co-founder Helen Meyer received a Citation from AES in 1999 for her contributions to the audio industry.

On booth 336, the new MM-4XP miniature loudspeaker — the long-awaited self-powered version of the amazing MM-4 miniature wide-range loudspeaker — will also be cause for excitement, making its North American debut alongside M'elodie and the UPJunior ultracompact VariO loudspeaker. A palm-sized box with a face roughly four inches square, the MM-4XP is capable of producing 113 dB maximum peak SPL with its onboard amplification and processing.

In addition to new products, the Meyer Sound booth will reflect the company's legacy of innovation with the display of the very first UPA-1 loudspeaker made — still in working order 27 years later. A classic, versatile design released in 1980, the UPA-1, first created to meet the needs of "the Godfather of Theatre Sound Design," Abe Jacob, is the subject of multiple patents and was an inaugural inductee to the TECnology Hall of Fame. Its self-powered descendant, the UPA-1P (itself 10 years old) continues to be one of Meyer Sound's most popular products, employed in venues, productions, and installations worldwide.

Meyer Sound's involvement in the convention will also include participation by Meyer Sound Senior Design Consultant Bob McCarthy on a panel chaired by acoustician Sam Berkow titled "Sound System Alignment and Acoustic Measurement," which will take place Saturday, October 6, at 9:00 a.m.

The TEC Awards ceremony is always held during the convention, too, and, as in many years past, Meyer Sound will be a Gold Sponsor, supplying the sound system for the ceremonies.
