Lithuanian Club Banks on the Beat of Meyer Sound

After enduring nearly a half-century of drab existence under Soviet authority, the Baltic states of Northern Europe have exploded over the past decade with a new exuberance in the arts, design, and entrepreneurship. A primary focal point for this culture is the Lithuanian capital city of Vilnius. Vilnius bustles with business activity during the daytime, while after nightfall the youthful pleasure-seekers descend on glittering new ventures like Pramogu Bankas — translated literally, "The Bank of Entertainment" — with its two casinos, four restaurants, seven bars, and a main music venue called the PB Club. Here, Vilnius's "in crowd" dances into the early morning with music from live bands and DJs reproduced by the newest and largest Meyer Sound club system in the region. "The owners wanted to make the PB Club a versatile, first-class showplace," explains Ramunas Alenskas of installation contractor Ogmios Pulsas Pro. "They wanted to have plenty of power for dancing to live bands and DJs, but they also wanted to use it for acoustic and electronic music, and for producing TV shows. After consulting with leading sound engineers around Lithuania, they decided that Meyer Sound offered by far the best solution." As a relative newcomer to designing complex Meyer Systems, Alenskas welcomed support from Meyer Sound's Design Services department and their use of MAPP Online Pro acoustical prediction software in determining the exact loudspeaker complement and configuration that would best suit the PB Club. The main stage system comprises a pair of MTS-4A full-range loudspeakers supplemented by four 700-HP ultrahigh-power subwoofers. To carry the sound into the balconies, to the back of the long room, and into adjoining VIP areas, the system also includes eight UPJ-1P compact VariO cabinets, four UPA-1P compact wide coverage loudspeakers, and four UPM-1P ultracompact wide coverage loudspeakers. The entire system is tied together and precision-aligned using a Galileo loudspeaker management system. With a seating capacity of 800 and many more standing and dancing, the reconstructed and lavishly redecorated venue easily conceals its former existence as a Soviet-era cinema — and not a bank. "The original Pramogu Bankas is inside a former bank building, but that entertainment complex is in Klaipeda, Lithuania's third-largest city," explains Alenskas. "When the owners decided to build an even bigger center in Vilnius, they kept the 'bank of entertainment' name, even though this time it was built in and around an old cinema." February, 2007 |
