Pasadena High School and Sam Rayburn High School, both located in Pasadena, Texas, a growing city within the Houston metropolitan area, recently completed the first top-to-bottom renovations of their respective auditoriums, two sturdy structures built more than 40 years ago. In addition to new seating and backstage areas, the two school auditoriums received extensive wall and ceiling acoustical treatments and new audio reinforcement systems based around Meyer Sound self-powered loudspeaker systems.

The main cabinet chosen for both auditoriums was the Meyer Sound CQ-1 wide coverage main loudspeaker. "I didn't have much proscenium space to work with at either school, so I needed a smaller device," notes Bill Schuermann, senior design consultant for HFP Acoustical Consultants, Inc., who oversaw acoustical renovations and sound system design. "The CQ-1 loudspeakers were a perfect fit, and they also have phenomenal sound." Israel Grinberg of Houston-based ArcTec Associates, Inc., served as principal architect for both projects.

The self-powered CQ-1 loudspeaker, originally developed for San Francisco's War Memorial Opera House, has been installed in premier performing arts and entertainment venues worldwide, including New York City's prestigious Carnegie Hall and the Home Depot Center in Los Angeles.

Two CQ-1 loudspeakers are installed in both the 832-seat auditorium at Sam Rayburn High School and the 990-seat auditorium at Pasadena High School, with a CQ-2 narrow coverage main loudspeaker added in the center of the system at Pasadena High. Both school auditoriums also contain a Yamaha M7CL digital mixing console, along with Meyer Sound UPM-1P ultracompact wide coverage loudspeakers for frontfill and a self-powered USW-1P compact subwoofer.

"These are pretty straightforward systems that give the schools premium sound at a reasonable cost," says Schuermann. "I've seen a whole lot more money go into high schools, but here, they opted for quality and not quantity."
