Growing annually in size and prestige, this year's Dubai International Jazz Festival topped off its ten-day city-wide festivities with three nights of concerts at the elegant Media City Amphitheater. A crowd of 28,000 fans was treated to an international roster of performers including David Gray, Boney James, Courtney Pine and Clara Oleg, with a showstopping finale by Robin Gibb of the legendary Bee Gees. Powerful and intelligible sound at the event was entrusted to a Meyer Sound system provided by Dubai-based Artes Audio Visual. "The festival has grown larger and more musically diverse every year," remarked Artes' engineer Avril Rodrigues, "and it has developed a reputation as one of the best-sounding live festivals there is. I honestly don't think we would have achieved this level of sound quality with anything other than Meyer Sound." The main Skywards Stage was outfitted with left and right hangs of eight M3D line array loudspeakers, each augmented by one MILO 120 and two MILO line array loudspeakers. Three more MILOs provided frontfill, with a vertical array of three CQ-2 loudspeakers for outfill. Low frequency was amply covered by eight 700-HP subwoofers in a cardioid formation, preventing low frequency buildup on the stage, along with an arc formation of eight M3D-Sub directional subwoofers at the front of the stage. A Galileo loudspeaker management system handled system drive and alignment, as well as compensation for the extreme temperature and humidity variances, ranging from 30% to 90%. Meyer Sound associate "dB Dave" Dennison provided technical support. "The festival site was surrounded by glass-covered business towers and the stage was facing uphill, so there was quite a bit of reflectivity," said Lothar Strunk, the event's Production Manager and Principal of Hanover, Germany-based Rocksound Management. "Using the M3D and MILO, we were able to focus the system perfectly to deliver great sound to every corner of the festival grounds. Avril and the Artes crew did a brilliant job, as did the Meyer Sound task force." July, 2008 |
