Creating Ideal Acoustics
with Steve Ellison

Berkeley-based Meyer Sound will exhibit at the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Convention for the first time, introducing a range of fully integrated audio solutions for creating dynamic sound experiences without compromising the aesthetic goals of a building design. Booth visitors can also participate in Meyer Sound's training seminar, "Creating Ideal Acoustics," as part of AIA's Continuing Education System (CES) program. The AIA Convention will take place April 30 - May 2, 2009 at San Francisco's Moscone Center.

Celebrating the company's 30th anniversary this year, Meyer Sound (booth 6810) will showcase an expanded line of low-profile loudspeakers designed to discreetly integrate into the architecture. The center of attention, however, will be the company's groundbreaking Constellation electroacoustic architecture. As the demand for multipurpose venues increases, Constellation provides a revolutionary solution to tackle the complex challenge of attaining optimal yet highly flexible acoustics, while remaining virtually invisible. Constellation has been endorsed by architects, world-class musicians, and acoustical consultants as the only system able to effectively provide natural-sounding acoustics appropriate for each type of performances at the touch of a button. Constellation is also considered a sustainable product because it allows architects to design venues that provide a wide range of acoustical environments with smaller overall volume, and eliminates the need to build large and costly orchestra shells.

A number of multipurpose venues around the world have chosen Constellation to provide the optimal acoustics for their varied presentations, including MUMUTH theatre at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz, Austria (Architect Ben van Berkel/UNStudio); Grace Community Church in Indianapolis, Ind. (Architect Kevin Callahan/Callahan Studios); and Northland, a Church Distributed, in Longwood, Fla. (Architect Donald Mahoney/Building God's Way and Architect Daniel Cook/DCA Architects), among others. Meyer Sound's 57-seat Pearson Theatre at its Berkeley headquarters (Marcy Wong Donn Logan Architects) is also equipped with Constellation, and has been acknowledged with an AIA San Francisco Citation Award in March 2009.

Other celebrated architectural gems have chosen Meyer Sound reinforcement systems for the pristine audio quality, including the historic Plaza Hotel in New York City, the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco, and the David Brower Center in Berkeley. Many of these loudspeakers will be shown on the booth, including the palm-sized MM-4XP miniature loudspeakers, along with the new MM-10 miniature subwoofer, an ideal complement for discreet distributed systems in commercial, residential, and institutional applications, and the externally powered UP-4XP ultracompact loudspeaker, an inconspicuous cabinet with high sound pressure levels.

As part of the CES program, professionals at the show can earn learning units on the Meyer Sound booth by participating in a 15-minute presentation entitled "Creating Ideal Acoustics." Steve Ellison, Meyer Sound's applications director, LCS Series, will discuss acoustical considerations in building design and the adoption of acoustical enhancements at 10:30, 11:30, and 1:30 on all three days of the show. In addition, on Friday May 1, a full-hour seminar by Robert P. Alvarado of Charles M. Salter Associates, Inc., entitled "Acoustical Design in Mixed Use Developments," will include substantial content on Constellation. On Wednesday April 29, participants will have the opportunity to experience a Constellation demo at the Charles M. Salter Associates offices on the AIA Convention walking tour, "U.S. Green Building Council LEED certified Commercial Interiors: Sustainable Design for Flexible Spaces." Meyer Sound takes pride in building all of its world-class systems at its Berkeley headquarters. By concentrating its manufacturing processes at one location, Meyer Sound's engineers can monitor closely to ensure the final products adhere to the strictest quality standards, and eliminate the extensive shipping of materials back and forth across the globe. Sustainability continues to be a priority as the company develops new products and processes that minimize environmental impact.
