Riding on the success of its latest CD release, Battle for the Sun, a reconstituted (with a new drummer) and reenergized Placebo is storming through the European arena circuit in late 2009. Loyal fans of the British alt-glam-rockers are packing into larger sporting and concert venues in 35 cities from Latvia to Italy to hear the band's rhythms and Brian Molko's mesmerizing vocals powered to full effect by Meyer Sound MILO line array loudspeakers. For the band's longtime FOH engineer, Ian Nelson, the 2009 foray was his third with Meyer Sound systems, which he favors for their trademark sonic characteristics. "Clarity is always a big plus for Meyer," he says. "The system always sounds clear and open, yet it's hugely powerful." Supplied by Canegreen, Ltd. of London, Placebo's touring complement comprises 32 MILO and four MILO 120 line array loudspeakers, 24 MICA line array loudspeakers for side hangs, plus eight M'elodie line array loudspeakers, and six MSL-4 loudspeakers for fill systems. A Galileo loudspeaker management system with Galileo 616 processors provides signal matrixing and all drive processing functions. Placebo's sensually visceral low end is propelled by a total of 42 700-HP subwoofers, with ten per side flown behind the main arrays. "We've found that this gives us tremendous low-frequency punch, and it has certainly cleaned up the response at the crossover point," Nelson comments. Nelson expresses appreciation for the high level of support Placebo has received from Meyer Sound, both in advance of the tour and at the inaugural concert. "Meyer have always been superb on the support side," he states. "We are using a SIM [3 audio analyzer] system for the first time on this tour, and Meyer Tech Support was tremendous help in getting it up and running, including attending the first show to make sure everything was working to our satisfaction. It's great to know that you have that level of backup from a manufacturer." The Placebo tour also marks a high point for Canegreen Ltd. Managing Director Yan Stile: "This tour embodies the fundamental ethos of why I still do what I do after so many years. It is perfection in all areas, from equipment to crew, without compromise in any way. That makes it a joy to be involved with." Luther Edmonds provides system configuration and logistical support services on behalf of Canegreen. The Meyer Sound system is easily scalable for the range of venue capacities, ranging from the Copenhagen's KB Halle, holding about 3,500, to more than 20,000 at London's O2 Arena.
