For three days this summer, the International Festival of University Music (FIMU) transformed the historic city of Belfort, France into a vibrant hub of live music. The occasion brought together 2,700 acts from 30 countries and 80,000 visitors in the picturesque town, with French rental company Arpège providing a full range of Meyer Sound signal processing tools and loudspeaker systems to ensure the best possible sound experience for the audience and musicians alike. "Rather than just sound pressure level, I am also looking for fidelity and intelligibility," says Jean-Albert Gaertner, technical director of FIMU. "The festival audience is as diverse as the musical acts and what is most important to us is that all stages deliver a consistent, high-quality sound image. I get that with Meyer Sound loudspeakers. From M'elodie to MICA and MILO (line array loudspeakers), there is a transparent sound signature which is very defined and detailed." In addition to the main line array systems, other Meyer Sound products on the festival grounds include the UPA-1P, UPM-1P, MSL-4, and CQ-1 loudspeakers, as well as 650-P and 700-HP subwoofers. System design was handled by veteran sound engineer, Christophe Dupin, using Meyer Sound's MAPP Online Pro acoustical prediction program, with Galileo loudspeaker management system taking charge of signal drive and processing. With a total of 14 stages, one of the challenges in setting up the sound systems at FIMU was to ensure each staging area had even coverage without disturbing other concerts. "The loudspeaker stacks were ten to 15 feet from the ground," says Dupin. "But to ensure an even sound coverage in the public areas, I used the multiple outputs of Galileo to feed the line source to the speakers two by two. This way, I can separately adjust the level of each pair. I soften the lower pairs and boost the upper ones to homogenize the sound pressure level coverage."
