The vision for The Palladium was clear from the project's onset: to create a flexible venue that would put Dubai on the world map of entertainment. Indeed, in its first year of operation, The Palladium has played host to Akon, Backstreet Boys, The Merchants of Bollywood, and The Twelve Tenors, in addition to the Middle East Waste Summit, the Gulf Malayalam Music Awards, and comedy shows from the Laughter Factory. Adaptable technical features, including a Meyer Sound MICA line array loudspeaker system, are credited with bringing the impressive programming potential to the venue. The Palladium's flexible technical features include a movable stage and a retractable seating system that allows the auditorium to serve as a flat concert space for 5,500 standing, and at the press of a button, an elegant theatre emerges complete with plush red seats. The installed Meyer Sound MICA system is described by Raymond Gaspar, entertainment entrepreneur and general manager of The Palladium, as "versatile and highly adaptable." The founder of a leading radio station in Lebanon, Gaspar is a pioneer who also brought full-scale opera and ballet to the United Arab Emirates. Inspired by the London Palladium, the venue realized Gaspar's dream to build a world-class live performance site in Dubai, and the Meyer Sound system is an integral part of its success. "The MICA system covers our entire auditorium, preserves sightlines, whilst giving us a clean and crisp coverage," Gaspar says. Designed by Meyer Sound technical consultant Dave Dennison, the system comprises left-right arrays of nine MICA line array loudspeakers, each hung below two 600-HP subwoofers. The configuration also includes four groundstacked 700-HP subwoofers and five M1D loudspeakers as frontfill. A Galileo loudspeaker management system with a Galileo 616 processor provides system drive and processing. "Our use of a Meyer Sound system also saves technicians' time." says Gaspar, "As it is already installed and perfectly tuned to our auditorium, our engineers are completely familiar with the system and its capabilities." Since its introduction in 2005, MICA has supported diverse presentation genres that range from rock to classical music to theatrical productions. Recent MICA applications include the Tyler Perry tour, installations at the Eastman School of Music and the Nokia Concert Hall at Estonia's Solaris Cultural and Leisure Centre.
