Korea's Great Mountains Music Festival Delights in Meyer Sound Constellation's Sonic Immersion

Concluding its eighth season in August, Korea's heralded Great Mountains Music Festival and School (GMMFS) received added inspiration in 2011 not only from its new artistic directors, famed violinist Kyung-Wha Chung and cellist Myung-Wha Chung, but also from sonic enrichment by Meyer Sound's Constellation acoustic system.

"The bottom line for a successful music festival is a concert hall with great sound," says Artistic Director Kyung-Wha Chung in an article in Korea's Joongang Sunday.

The Great Mountains Music Festival brought musicians and conductors from around the world to the idyllic Alpensia Resort for three weeks of concerts and master classes. The principal venue was the resort's intimate 600-seat Alpensia Concert Hall, which physical acoustics when occupied were found to be inadequate for the festival's concert repertoire that encompassed everything from a suite for solo cello to a Mozart requiem with full orchestra and chorus. Both musicians and audiences appreciated the added acoustical depth and richness provided by Constellation.

"I'd performed at the Alpensia hall in February and there was a great improvement in the acoustics since then," observes cellist Sangmin Park. "The hall sounded very dry in the cello and bass section back then, but it no longer seems that way."

Installed temporarily for the festival, the Constellation system was driven by the Meyer Sound D-Mitri digital audio platform with eight D-Mitri digital audio processors at its core, including three DVRAS processors hosting the patented VRAS algorithms responsible for Constellation's stunningly natural acoustical qualities. Thirty tiny cardioid microphones captured the hall's acoustic ambience and, after VRAS processing, the resulting early reflections and late reverberations were reproduced by 38 MM-4XP miniature self-powered loudspeakers and nine M1D-Sub subwoofers. Although the system focused on stage acoustics, a significant benefit also was realized throughout most seating areas of the small hall.

"I had not heard the hall acoustics before," admits cellist Lluís Claret, "but for me it was a very nice experience. The acoustics were just perfect."

Installation of Constellation was facilitated by Incova Ltd. of Seoul with coordination by Managing Director Eugine Yune. Throughout the extensive program of concerts, classes, and seminars at GMMFS in 2011, the two celebrated artistic directors were joined by the Great Mountains Music Festival Orchestra and the Seoul Motet Choir along with 47 internationally renowned artist-instructors that included Tchaikovsky Competition winner Karine Georgian and Kevin Kenner, whose latest CD was named Editor's Choice by Gramophone.
