This February, Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra returned to the Bay Area for the first time since 1987, and delivered three impassioned concerts at Cal Performances' Zellerbach Hall on the University of California Berkeley campus. To provide the appropriate acoustics for musicians and audiences, Cal Performances engaged its permanently installed Meyer Sound Constellation acoustic system for the celebrated Viennese sound of Mahler, Schumann, and Brahms. On the performance of Brahms's Symphony No. 2, San Francisco Chronicle music critic Joshua Kosman wrote: "a vibrant musical glow—warm but steely, expansive yet detailed—filled the reaches of Berkeley's Zellerbach Hall." Constellation was first implemented in Zellerbach Hall in 2006 to enhance the hall's physical acoustics so audiences and performers could experience each of the diverse programming—from jazz to chamber music, classical piano recitals to opera—with optimal sound. With the touch of a button, venue operators can expand the acoustical characteristics of the 2,014-seat multipurpose venue to meet the requirements of each genre, making Zellerbach a truly pristine presenter of the performing arts. "The acoustical quality of Zellerbach Hall has been transformed through the use of Constellation," says Matías Tarnopolsky, director of Cal Performances. "The system brings a purity and clarity to the acoustics of the hall which otherwise would not exist, and has enabled us to broaden the scope of our programming." In addition to the Vienna Philharmonic performances, programs that have been heard through the Constellation system at Zellerbach Hall include the Mark Morris Dance Group, the San Francisco Symphony, the Berkeley Symphony Orchestra, Yo-Yo Ma, the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, the San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival, Australia's Circus Oz, and many more.
