What is RSS?

RSS, or Really Simple Syndication, is an easy way of dynamically receiving new content from websites. Most major news organizations offer subscriptions to RSS feeds, which send regular updates with the latest news to the subscriber, eliminating the need to constantly revisit the site to keep up with developments. The Meyer Sound Stories RSS feed includes headlines and summaries of Sound Stories, along with links to the full article on www.meyersound.com/news/. Whenever a new story is posted, you will be notified in your RSS reader. Click here to get started rss feed.

How do I read these feeds?

Feeds are read from an RSS reader (also called an "aggregator"), which monitors the RSS feeds to which you’ve subscribed and informs you when there is new content. For Windows users, there are applications such as FeedDemon, while those running Mac OS X often use NetNewsWire, NewsFire or Safari RSS. Bloglines is an excellent online service that works in most browsers and makes it unnecessary to download an additional application. Firefox users can download extensions like Sage and Lektora, which enable reading RSS feeds in the browser.

After installing a reader, subscribing to a feed is accomplished by getting the URL for the desired RSS feed into the reader’s RSS subscription list. Often, the URL can be obtained by clicking on an orange rss feed (or, sometimes, blue) button labeled "RSS," "XML," or, occasionally, "RDF." That URL then needs to be copied and pasted into the appropriate subscriptions dialog of the reader. Check your reader’s documentation for details.

For more information about RSS and descriptions of some readers, read the New York Times article, "Fine-Tuning Your Filter for Online Information."
