Deutsches Theater Receives Landmark Sound System
The Meyer Sound File - Summer 1997

Meyer Sound dealer Best GmbH of Munich, Germany, recently sold a Meyer self-powered system to the Deutsches Theater MÜnchen-the first Meyer self-powered sound system to be installed in Germany.

The system features a center cluster with three UPA-1Cs, left and right clusters with two MSL-4s each, and two 650-P subwoofers installed on stage. Individual CQ-1s are installed left and right as front fills. The system also features individual UPA-1Cs installed left and right as balcony fills, and UPL-1s and UPL-2s installed as underbalcony fills. In addition, the system features two MTS-4s, which can be installed and positioned wherever needed.

The theater hosts a wide range of performances, including musicals such as Fame and Evita, performers such as Andre Heller and Traumfabrik, and dance companies such as Stomp. During Munich's annual Carnival, the theater functions as a dance hall. Once a year, the theater is used for operas.

Built in 1897 and renovated in 1976 and 1982, the theater normally seats 1,664. For some performances, though, 40 seats are removed to accommodate the orchestra. Thomas ZÜllich of Meyer Sound Germany designed the new sound system and SIM'd it once it was installed. He reports that Herr Gerringer, the theater's technical director, and Jan Zahalka, the theater's sound manager, like the new system very much.

"We see this as the first of many self-powered installations," says ZÜllich. "The advantages of the self-powered systemsÜÜhigh quality sound, ease of installation, and improved reliabilityÜÜare appealing to theaters everywhere, including Germany. We believe we've provided the Deutsches Theater with a powerful, flexible system that will suit their needs, and allow them to do what they do best-that is, bring a wide variety of high quality acts to local audiences. We're pleased to have worked closely with them on this project, which we view as a milestone in European audio."
