The Meyer Sound File - Fall 1996

Smokey Joe's Cafe, a rock 'n roll musical featuring the songs of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, is touring the United States with a Meyer sound system designed by sound designer Tony Meola and supplied by Sound Associates of New York. The tour, which began recently in Minneapolis, is scheduled to last two years.

The show's sound system includes eight CQ™-1 Self-Powered Loudspeakers, four CQ™-2 Self-Powered Loudspeakers, six UPL-1 Loudspeakers, two 650-P Self-Powered Subwoofers, and seven CP-10 Parametric Equalizers. This is the first touring theatrical production to feature Meyer Sound's new CQ-1 and CQ-2 loudspeakers.

Smokey Joe's Cafe features nine singers and dancers and a seven-piece band that performs on stage. The show some of the classic songs that Leiber and Stoller have written over the the past three decades, including "Hound Dog," "Love Potion No. 9," "Spanish Harlem," and "On Broadway."

"The new Meyer self-powered loudspeakers are great," said Meola. "They're wonderful tools for what I do."

Meola's sound design credits include the current Broadway productions of The King and I and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, the touring production of Les Misérables, and the new musical Juan Darién, which opened on October 31 at Lincoln Center. Meola is a SIM Designer and Operator, who uses SIM System II regularly in his work.

The new sound system has proved so successful on this U.S. tour that Meola has designed a similar system for the London production of Smokey Joe's Cafe, which opened on October 15 at the Prince of Wales Theatre. Autograph Sound Ltd. of London is supplying the loudspeakers for the London show.

"Musical shows like Smokey Joe's Cafe really test a sound system," says Mark Johnson, Director of Public Relations at Meyer Sound. "We're pleased that the CQ products are being accepted so quickly in this part of the industry."
