We Fest Kicks Up Its Heels with Massive Self-Powered System
The Meyer Sound File - Fall 1996

Main stage at the We Fest

How do you reach 200,000 people gathered outdoors for the largest country music festival in the world? Jim White, owner of Nashville Cartage and Sound, and production manager and stage manger for the We Fest Country Music and Camping Festival, recently answered this question with a massive sound system featuring Meyer Sound self-powered loudspeakers.

Working with sound rental company Blackhawk Audio, also of Nashville, Jim White's Nashville Cartage and Sound provided the We Fest with 80 MSL-4 Self-Powered Loudspeakers and 40 650-P Self-Powered Subwoofers, distributed among two speaker towers on stage and three delay towers. In addition to the self-powered loudspeakers, the front-of-house system included MSL-2 loudspeakers configured as downfills to cover 4,000 box seats.

"This is the best the festival has ever sounded," White says. "For the first time ever, we had so much power we had to turn the system down."

Since 1983, the annual We Fest has been bringing together some of the finest talent in country music. This year's festival, held on August 2, 3, and 4 at the Soo Pass Ranch in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, featured performances by Faith Hill, Tim McGraw, The Beach Boys, Blackhawk, Sawyer Brown, Travis Tritt & Marty Stuart, Pam Tillis, Mary Chapin Carpenter, and Alan Jackson.

White says he is impressed by how well the self-powered loudspeakers performed throughout the festival. "I've always been a fan of MSL-4s," he says, "but I was especially pleased by how well the loudspeakers held up outdoors. We had heavy rain and fluctuating power, but we didn't have even a single failure with the amplifiers in the self-powered loudspeakers. I thought the new sound system was great."

White is already busy planning next year's festival. Questions remain about who some of the performers will be, but White feels he knows the answer to the question about sound: Meyer Sound Self-Powered Loudspeaker Systems.
